Treatment of Hemorrhoids

Treatment of HemorrioidsHemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels in your anus and lower rectum that become irritated and inflamed as a result of increased pressure on the anal area. Hemorrhoids are a common condition that can be prevented.

Hemorrhoids occur when the veins in the rectum or anus become affected by severe pressure, and the blood within those veins begins to pool inside the vessels, causing the blood vessels to swell and become painful. This pressure may occur while straining during a bowel movement or during pregnancy.

Hemorrhoids can develop internally on the inside of the rectum and on externally on the skin around the anus. Depending on the location of the hemorrhoids, symptoms may vary, but can include:

  • Itching around the anus
  • Minimal, painless bleeding
  • Swelling around the anus
  • A lump near the anus that may be painful
  • Pain during a bowel movement

Bleeding is a common symptom of hemorrhoids, but it should not be assumed that it is a result of a hemorrhoid. Bleeding during a bowel movement may be the sign of another condition or disease. Contact our office for a physical examination to diagnose the problem.

The best treatment for hemorrhoids is prevention. Avoid excessive straining during bowel movements, and be sure to include enough fiber in your diet. If treatment is needed, there are medications available as well as a range of surgical procedures.

While hemorrhoids are an embarrassing topic to discuss, it is important to realize that it is both a very common and treatable disorder. If you suffer from hemorrhoids, ask your doctor for recommendations on treatment.
